Blogger Spotlight for 2012

Blogging serves different purposes for different people. Some blog because they enjoy writing and some blog to share their families stories. Others blog to share tips and provide a level of education to their readers. Regardless of the reason behind the generation of the blog you can't deny that blogging has become much more mainstream and bloggers are achieving a new level of respect. There are some phenomenal bloggers out there, so many in fact that my Google Reader is always at 500+ unread!

In order to spotlight some of these great blogs the Genealogy and History Links Library site will be announcing a Blogger of the Month during 2012. I have been a contributor to GHLL for the past 10 years and am responsible for the Web Site of The Week feature. As I came to rely on blogs in addition to websites in my genealogy research I thought it would be a good idea to shine the light on them as well. Additionally, some of these bloggers will be guest posting for the newsletter Branching Out.

Of course since this was my idea...I get to be the first Blogger of the Month!! :) It's only fair right? While I don't claim to be in the same caliber as the bloggers that will follow me, I do enjoy their blogs and appreciate the research tips and expertise they bring to the table. I reached out to a group of my favorites, asking if they would like to participate. Being the wonderful group of people they are, I had a great positive response.

While you take some time to check out the featured bloggers please also browse the GHLL site to see vast array of information that is available.

Blogger of Honor - Midwest Family History Expo

I am excited to announce that I am a Blogger of Honor for the Midwest Family History Expo. You may have noticed that I've mentioned the Midwest Expo will be held in Kansas City. I may actually have mentioned it once or twice or three or four times on Facebook and Twitter, but who is counting! I am looking forward to having an Expo in my hometown that is so highly regarded in the genealogy community.

The agenda is filling up with quality speakers on topics that cover genealogy around the world.  There are currently 110 sessions on the schedule!  Take some time to review the presentation schedule.  I am sure you will find multiple presentations that will appeal to your area of research.  The exhibit hall will be host to local as well as national libraries, archives and commercial genealogy service companies.  There is time set aside each day to visit the exhibit hall.

I will be posting in the coming weeks with more specifics on the speakers, their presentations and the exhibit hall vendors.  I will even give you some highlights of what Kansas City has to offer in the way of tourism close to the Expo site.  I hope to see you in Kansas City!

Getting Organized Genealogy Style Day 7

Today's organization has revolved around this blog. I've spent time tweaking a few of the options Blogger provides such as the number of posts that show on a page as well as the layout for labels and archives. I've also played around with the feature that allows you to schedule when a post is published. I've not used that in the past and now realize what a convenience it will be. I need to do more work on my links and photos to ensure that each open in a new window rather than navigating the visitor away from my site. That requires minor HTML code that I am now learning.

The Genealogy & Family History Blogger's Almanac, created by The Family Curator, has proven inspirational to me. I like the seasonally inspired blogging prompts and the overall monthly theme. The idea to schedule posts in the future is covered in the Almanac and finally a light bulb came on for me in that respect! I feel more organized now and look forward to planning my future posts for November!

Now back to scanning photos. I have my maternal Grandfather's photo album and need to preserve the photos!
